The National Centre for Scientific Research DEMOKRITOS (NCSRD) is the biggest research centre in applied sciences and engineering in Greece and it is a self-governing research organisation. NCSRD consists of five Institutes spanning a broad range of activities, and of divisions responsible for administrative and technical support. Staff consists of about 400 persons, over 300 research associates and about 100 graduate students working towards Ph.D. degree. It is the home of the Greek National Host and a major node in the Greek National Research and Technology Network (GR-Net). NCSRD participates in the project through the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT).
NCSRD has solid experience in the fields of SDN/NFV and 5G networking. More specifically, it is involved in the area of 5G networking through its participation in the H2020 5G-PPP Program through the SESAME, SONATA, and CHARISMA projects, where it contributes to the NFV orchestrator, the development of service VNFs targeting to small cell 5G networks, as well as other key components of the NFV/SDN domain. IIT is also responsible for the technical and scientific coordination of SESAME project. It also participates in the H2020 VITAL project where it investigates the virtualisation/“liquidation" of satellite network resources and their provision as autonomous virtual networks (“slices”), acting also as Technical Manager and in H2020 VISION project focusing on various security aspects.
In FP7, IIT can also demonstrate strong involvement, as it participated in PERSEUS-SEC/FP7, HURRICANE-ICT/FP7, ALICANTE-ICT/FP7 (IP), ADAMANTIUM-ICT/FP7 (Coordinator), SAVASA-SEC/FP7, GERYON-SEC/FP7, SUNNY-SEC/FP7. Also in FP7/ICT T-NOVA project, which involves also SDN/NFV technologies and is relevant to the 5G ESSENCE, IIT acted as the Project and the Technical Coordinator. Moreover, IIT participated to ESA CloudSat project as Technical Manager in 2014-15. IIT has long record and significant achievements in the fields of network management and cross-layer resource optimisation within the Future Internet scene, including Network- and Perceived-Quality of Service analysis and Network- and Content- awareness for tight service/network coupling., where it investigated the virtualisation/“liquidation" of satellite network resources and their provision as autonomous virtual networks (“slices”).
